A Brooksville man went to
jail Sunday after authorities said he broke
into the Hernando County animal shelter to
get his own dogs back.
Deputies said Michael Lee Bell had left
Precious and Lover Boy tied to a pole outside
the RaceTrac gas station at 16129 Cortez
Boulevard on Saturday while he bought beer
and then forgot about them.
Hernando County Animal Services took
custody of the mixed-breed dogs.
On Sunday, Bell crawled under a fence at the
shelter on Oliver Street, broke into the
building and removed the dogs from a
kennel. Then he walked to a nearby store,
where his wife picked them up.
"The defendant stated he just wanted to get
his babies back," a deputy wrote in the arrest
report, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Bell said an Animal Services worker told him
he would have to pay $350 to get the dogs
back, and he didn't think he should have to
pay it.
Deputies arrested Bell on a charge of
commercial burglary. On the way to jail, he
yelled expletives at Deputy Nicole Stevens
and threatened to kill her, the report said
